In recent
years, we've seen a resurgence in user content. Trials HD and Trials Evolution
lets players create their own tracks to upload and share, Halo: Reach comes
with its own map editor and Mojang's Minecraft allows users to craft worlds
from scratch.
So what is the
next logical evolution?
Enter
Storybricks.
For those yet
to hear the name, Storybricks is an ambitious title currently in the alpha-stage
of development that will allow players to create their own RPG-MMO story and
experience that they and their friends can play.
The video
showcases the volume of creativity that Storybricks has to offer but if this is
the next step in user-created content, why hasn't this been done already? This was
a question Storybricks developer/wizard Brian 'Psychochild' Green was more than
happy to answer:
“Storytelling with emotionally intelligent NPCs hasn't been done before because it's really hard. It's easier to crank out yet another combat system than to create a system that makes NPCs seem like proper characters. It's not something that has been showing immediate return, so it's not like you can bang out a prototype system over a weekend”
Storybricks
currently lacks the backing and safety of a big-name publisher, so for the
product to reach its full potential the Storybricks team have set up a
Kickstarter fund, that currently sits at $16,573 out of a $250,000 target with
24 days left on the clock.
“There's also the problem of communicating why it's cool. Some people with a lot of imagination 'get it', but we've had a hard time selling the vision to investors and our Kickstarter project was slow to gain momentum. We're working on communicating the awesomeness better.”
For fans who
love to create, Storybricks is shaping up to be one of the hottest titles in
development. Who doesn't want to make their own RPG-MMO?
