What do kids think of the new Sly Cooper game? Wesley Copeland Jr. has the answer.
What’s game have you been playing?
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
What’s a Sly Cooper?
Sly Cooper is a thief that has to go back in time to recover the Thievius Raccoonus book.
Why does he?
Because the book’s being erased by Le Paradox – and evil skunk – and his gang. That’s bad because it’ll get rid of all of the Cooper history and he wouldn’t have a business anymore because his ancestors would be gone.
Who are the Main Characters in Thieves in Time?
The three main characters are THE MURRAY! Sly Cooper and Bentley the Turtle.
What do they do?
THE MURRAY! Is all about going up to enemies head first and not worrying about anything because he’s got a tonne of health. He doesn’t have any ranged attacks but has close combat like punchin’ and stuff like that. How Murray pickpockets is he picks enemies up and shakes them for loot.
Sly Cooper is the main character and the game is focused around him. The way of his combat is he is sneaky; if you take one step too far a guard will see you. You need to stay close to them so you can pickpocket them. Sly uses his good old cane and gives it a poke forwards and hooks out their loot. As well, when Sly is at a close range he does a knockout attack where he hooks them into the air then whacks them down to the floor. One of the upgrades you can buy for Sly is his paraglider, which lets him to a nice little glide to the floor.
As you go through different worlds Sly will require a new costume. They’re all unique and all of them are fun, especially the archery costume.
Bentley The Turtle is like Doctor Octopus in a wheelchair. How he pickpockets is he uses his robot arms to grab something and keeps it. His attack is either used at close range or a distance and he can use a bomb. With upgrades his bombs can be changed to sleep ammo and more. Bentley also is able to fly on his wheelchair but there is a little bar that when it runs out and he stops flying. Bentley is the brains behind the group and he can do hacks. If you come across a box thing with Le Paradox’s head on, that means you can go up to it and hack it. He has three hacks; one of them is a ball that you need to use the motion sensor [in the controller] to control, the second is he uses a tank to take a key and put the key into the keyhole that enables him to get the hack completed, and the third (my personal favourite) he is a little turtle that has two pistols and you have to navigate your way to the end of the level and you’ll come across a massive eyeball with lips that you have to use your pistols to shoot it in the eye. The eye can either shoot out a massive eye – that’s kind of like a an enemy you see in the hack – or it can shoot out a thin beam or a giga-beam that’ll completely annihilate you.
Who is your favourite of the three main characters?
I like them all because they’re all pretty unique.
What other characters are there?
Bob is an ancestor from the prehistoric period. He is a caveman bear thing with a massive stick with a pointy stone and he can climb up icy bits.
Sir Gelleth is from 13th century England and looks like a Cooper in shiny armour (Kk- KLKK!). He can fire a slingshot that allows him to break through wood.
Salim Al-Kupar flies on a magic carpet. He can also do a snake climb that lets him spin upwards round a pole.
Riouichi is the Sushi Master and a ninja. His response to everything is “Don’t worry, I can do this. I’m a ninja.” He jumps by focusing and that enables him to jump over far distances (genius idea of getting into the main cooking place by using his sushi knives).
Carmelita Fox is Sly’s girlfriend. She has a gun but the control of her gun is ridiculously hard to aim until you get an unlock that lets you shoot further.
Tennessee ‘Kid’ Cooper is an over-the-toply cool cowboy. His cane is also a gun. Some of his other features are he does a crackshot that lets you focus on enemies and tag them and when the time runs out, you automatically shoot them all (ED: Red Dead’s Deadeye system).
What are the graphics like?
It looks beautiful. It’s very bright and everything’s got loads of detail. Although in the time period of ‘Turning Japanese’ you see a picture of Carmelita with big boobs.
How playable is this game?
It’s a long game and it’s fun. There’s nothing that’s really annoying except for the bosses. They just launch rallies of attacks that you cannot dodge – well, you can dodge some of them, but they’re unfair.
What is there to do after you finish it?
You won’t have already got all the collectables – bottles, safes, masks, and treasures – because you need the later costumes to get all the collectables in the early levels. I would recommend using Sly for them, because the majority of them are costume parts.
Would You Tell Your Friends to Play It?
Yeah. It’s a good game and it’s worth playing.
Finally, if you had to give it score out of ten, what would it be and why?
8/10 because some of the ancestors aren’t much of a big deal and I’m annoyed with the gun controls of Tennessee because he’s one of my favourites. Other than that, it is a fantastic game.
Position: Editor-in-chief's ten year-old son.
When he's not becoming a future journalist, Wesley Jr. enjoys Moshi Monsters, YouTube, and playing lots and lots of videogames. He has more characters unlocked on Castle Crashers than you.
